IS “THE LOST CITY” WORTH WATCHING?
by Maryam Bucheeri
Starring the glamorous Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum and directed by the Nee brothers, The Lost City (2022) was a major hit in Hollywood’s perilous turbulence. What more could the industry strive for than a thrilling escapade of a romance novelist who gets abducted in a volcanic eruption-prone island during her book tour along with her cover model as they both indulge in escaping while evoking an enchanting romantic feel?
Although the storyline is original and thus is unlikely to strike a majority of today’s audiences due to the fact that it is not one that the industry is hungry for at the time where most ideas are repetitive, it is undeniably funny and the chemistry between the main characters is refreshing.
The character of Loretta, played by Bullock is nothing captivating as she’s simply a writer who is grieving her husband’s death, which threatens her career. However the character of Alan, played by Tatum proves that he’s not only appealing to the eyes, but also heroic and emotionally intelligent. And as expected, the two characters fall in love. Despite the fact that it’s predictable considering that they’re trapped on an adventurous mission together alone, the spontaneous love-birds add a nice spice to the movie. Loretta’s messy social media manager who eventually gets involved in saving the two trapped in the island, adds a remarkable addition of humor kicks to the movie. Her character is relatable, yet unforgettable due to her heroic act….
Nevertheless, the storyline between Loretta and Alan is funny and awkward, providing a couple of good laughs throughout the movie. The adventurous atmosphere in a mysterious setting with amazing visuals including the stunning waterfall is something that distinguishes it among other romcoms, which is a rarity nowadays. The filmmakers were able to create a balanced piece that featured both genres adventure and romance, and it is definitely worth watching to see a refreshing concept and have a couple of laughs.
